History
The tin cup necklace recieved it’s name from the famous movie “Tin Cup”. Two famous actors that were in this movie were Renee Russon and Kevin Costner. It was filmed in 1996. It would take another article to explain the entire movie so I will try to just some it up in a few sentences. Basically the whole movie is about Kevin Coster who played Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy, a pro golfer, and Renee Russo who played a psychologist by the name of Molly Griswold. The two bocome involved during the movie which leads to marriage. What in the world does this have anything to do with a tin cup necklace? Well, Russon wore a tin cup necklace at her wedding. A famous hollywood designer, Wendy Brigode, designed this tin cup necklace.
There is another movie called “Ransom” where Renee wears another tin cup necklace. This kick started a run of appearances of the tin cup necklace in shows such as Beverly Hills 90210 and Seinfeld.

The tin cup necklace has adopted many other names also. It is often reffered to as a floating pearl necklace and a pearl illusion necklace.
Does anyone know what a tin cup necklace look like?It is a beautiful necklace that contains pearls that are spaced out along a beading chain. The chain is called a beading chain and can be either sterling silver or gold filled or even 14kt gold. The pearls are normally spaced about and inch apart. This appears as pearls floating on a womans necklace which of course is an illusion. You can choose the type of pearl for your tin cup necklace as either rea,Swarovski,freshwater,cultured, or even akoya. If your a woman who likes crystals rather than pearls, you can have the tin cup necklace made of crystals instead of pearls. A tin cup necklace that has crystals instead of pearls on it is usually called a camilla necklace. The pearls and crystals are usually 6 or 8 mm and can be any color available. The most popular is white or cream.
First you need a beading chain. All you need is nine pearls. You may have to drill the pearls out a little bit so that they slide easily along the chain. Between each of the pearls you will need to put two crimp balls so that the pearls stay put. Now you need to crimp a clasp and hoop on either end of the beading chain. It is that easy! If you’d prefer to have a necklace that is 16″, then snip the beading chain to a legnth of 16″. As far as an 18″ necklace, the same applies.
